Vijayawada: The decision of Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) to ban meat during Krishna Pushkarams from August 9 to 25 evoked a huge resentment among the people. Alcohol is also banned within 500 meters radius of the Pushkar ghats.
Many star hotels have expressed their resentment against the ban saying that they have provisions which allows them to serve non-vegetarian dishes.
The officials issued strict orders about the ban cautioning serious action will be taken if rules are flouted. The slaughter house of Municipal corporation will be closed during the Pushkarams.



Chief Medical and Health Officer G. Gopi Naik said the decision has been taken as scores of people would be visiting the city during the 12-day fete wherein ban on sale of meat, slaughtering of animals along with seafood has been imposed to maintain hygienic conditions in the city as well to preserve piety of the fete.

Many star hotels have expressed their resentment against the ban saying that they have provisions which allows them to serve non-vegetarian dishes. To this, Gopi said they will hold meetings with managements of star hotels and outlets such as KFC and would appeal them not to serve non-vegetarian food items during the pious fete.
Meanwhile, many meat sellers rue that due to shutdown their business would affect for the 17 days long. “How do we survive and what should we feed to our families urging the government to rethink over the decision” said a fish seller.
