Lok Sabha speaker Sumitra Mahajan has come up with the proposal to construct a new Parliament building in December last year citing the 88-Year-Old Structure can't meet the future demands. She even suggested two options as the site for new building - 1) The area were the present Parliament complex exists, 2) The area across Rapath. Particularly, She pointed out that second option would be much better due to the vast space.

After several months, Centre has approved the proposal of a new Parliament building behind Vayu Bhawan at Rajpath. Urban Development Minister M Venkaiah Naidu proposed a tunnel across Rajpath to connect the new Parliament building and existing Parliament complex.

Delimitation of Lok Sabha constituencies is likely to happen in the year 2026. Increasing the seating capacity of present Parliament above 550 is going to be very difficult. As the construction of new Parliament complex takes a minimum 5-6 years, Its better to start the work within a year.

The existing Parliament building was constructed in the year 1927. Inspite of the growing demand, Centre hasn't thought of a new complex until recently.
