West Bengal gets a 'Name' change. The State Cabinet adopted a resolution to remove 'West' from 'West Bengal'. Very soon, The state might be known as just Bengal in English & Banga in Bengali. A special session of the Assembly will be convened on August 26th to discuss on altering the Name.

Name of West Bengal's capital Calcutta was changed to Kolkata in January 2001 by then Left Front Government led by Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee.

West Bengal Politicians and Bureaucrats often complained about the high-level meetings in New Delhi where the tradition of calling the representatives as per the alphabetical order of their States continued. The new Name will help the state move from bottom of the table to the top and protects the interests of the Bengalis.

Not many knew that during the pre-Independence era, united West Bengal, Bangladesh and few Northeast territories were collectively known as Bengal.
