In a historic judgement, The Supreme Court granted permission for a Rape Victim to terminate 24-week-old foetus.
The Bench comprising Justices JS Khehar and Arun Mishra took the call after going through the medical report submitted by a Team of Doctors at the KEM Hospital. They came to the opinion that continuance of the pregnancy would be a big threat to the life of the woman.
As per The Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act, 1971, Abortion after the 20th week of pregnancy isn't permitted. Centre, however, issued a clarification that a 20-week cap on aborting pregnancy isn't applicable if the pregnant woman's life is in danger.
The Woman, who alleged her fiancé has raped her on the pretext of marriage, moved SC against 20-week cap on abortion citing its a violation of the right to lead a dignified life.
